Practical information on technical stretching. Good book with some practical information. Delves a little too deeply into philosophy for me, but all in all good.
This is certainly not an instant-fix method- what you put in is what you get out- but there seems to be no limit to what you can get out of this book. This book contains a lot of ideas that are packed together closely so it can be a bit intimidating at times. You find yourself wanting footnotes to go into detail on many of the points made. I have had incredible results in my flexibility, strength, and over all well being thanks to the methods in this book. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to improve their health, happiness and appreciation for life.5/5 It has great advice and insights on nutrition, life, love, dedication, etc. This is way more than a book on stretching though. and reads more like an inspiring and insightful story from a wise teacher than a training guide.
Everything I could check that he says about these meridians is true. I have taken yoga classes for years my first one in the 1960s. Just from reading the book I could do the stretches and get effective changes to my body. For example the stretches for my lats. (latisimus dorsi) did improve my posture quickly bringing my shoulders back. This has opened up many new way of seeing others and myself. changed the rotation of my upper arms taking pressure off my wrists.
The information in this book is revolutionary and life changing.I am a professional massage therapist. Having my shoulders back straitened out my neck so it was not as stiff. This works better and faster.Another example, the stretches has changed the flexibility of my hamstrings which has taken pressure out of my lower back. The changes from this style of stretching are long lasting and cumulative. These changes were not limited to my physical body. What I learned in this book agrees with and completes what I learned in yoga and massage. Longer more flexible lats. I have been working in the field for 16 years. I have taken a lot of classes and experienced a lot of ways of doing bodywork.
He calls these muscle chains meridians and they are the same meridians as in Traditional Chinese Medicine. I have received massage, structural integration and many other types of body work many very good and effective. Less back pain and better movement. The psychological changes which the author describes in his book happened to me. will help carpal tunnel and other wrists problems.
The book teaches there are psychological, spiritual and emotional effects that are particular to certain muscle groups. When you effectively stretch particular muscle group you will get certain psychological effects. This type of stretching is better than anything else I have received or done. Nothing changed my hamstring as much or as fast as the way Bob Cooley teaches stretching in this book.
I work with shoulder posture and tension every day. This allowed me to breath more deeply. Yes this stretch for lats.
I love it. It is a very good book. I needed the images and explanations for my workout program.
I have more energy and a better outlook than at any other time I can remember in my life. It's a great book, providing in-depth information at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, with lots of extra information about the idea behind energy meridians, the organs they affect, and how resistance stretching affects them. And I'm the living proof of it. Can stretching make you happy.
I purchased this book after a free introductory session at Bob Cooley's Studio 16 in Boston, from which I walked out a new woman. I'd give this book more than 5 stars if I could. I used to be stiff as a stick, and now I'm bendy after only a month. No more pain in my shoulder, which had been bothering me for years.
When you do it Bob's way, absolutely. Thanks Bob. This book explains the 16 different stretches that will change your life. Bob has developed a total system of understanding the mind-body-spirit connection that will appeal to anyone wanting to feel more grounded, more open to possibility, and just simply happy.
